Federal Group has been a passionate supporter of Variety: The Children’s Charity in Tasmania since 1993.

We do this by assisting to deliver programs and grants to sick or disadvantaged children and holding events like the 'Variety of Gins,' and the annual 'Variety of Chefs' gala dinner, led by Executive Chef Andre Kropp.

We are also the naming rights sponsor of TasBash, a novelty car race involving some of the wackiest cars you've ever seen hit the road. Each year this procession of vehicles stops off to visit the many schools and kids who have benefited from Variety’s work.

In 2021, Wrest Point’s unmissable pink Mercedes, the 'Regines Roller,' made her debut and continues to raise additional funds in support of Variety each year.

Bringing many years of experience in hospitality General Management, we are thrilled to welcome Linda to our team at Wrest Point.

Linda is a dynamic executive with over 20 years of leadership experience across diverse industries including hotels, hospitality, transport, and health & fitness. Bringing proven expertise in strategic planning, operations management, team optimisation, and client relationship development. Linda has been recognised for driving profitable performance and fostering a collaborative team culture. Skilled in effective communication, negotiation, and problem-solving.

Linda says, "Initially, it was the actual role that sparked my interest, however, as I moved through the recruitment process and learnt more about the history of Wrest Point, Federal Hospitality and their Principles, I knew this was a company I wanted to be a part of. Why have we ordered 45,120 golf balls?

Because we have an incredible new entertainment and golfing venue opening at Country Club Tasmania in 2025, called The Range.

Meet Dan, he has joined the team at Country Club Tasmania to lead the venue operations at The Range.

What is your role at Federal Hospitality and when did you join the team? What attracted you to this role?

I joined the team at CCT in late 2024. My role is “The Range” Venue Operations Manager. Firstly, I’m a lover of Golf (although not very talented) so working in an industry that I’m passionate about ticked the biggest box. Other requirements of the role like people leadership, operations management and customer service I recognise as my strengths therefore thought it would be a super opportunity.

Why is the new precinct so special?

The new Range Precinct is possibly the most exciting entertainment venue that Launceston and Tassie has seen for a while. Although titled “The Range” it's more than just a Golf Driving Range. There are 2 stories of Driving Range bays, 28 in all that feature Top Tracer technology (whether it be for Golf Practice, Games, Kids novelty activities, target practice or just seeing how far you can hit a ball, Top Tracer has you covered).

Each bay also features a Foxtel screen and upbeat background tunes, the precinct also has an 18 hole fully landscaped minigolf course, bar, terrace, and lounge for casual dining that overlooks the minigolf course. Let’s not forget the Awesome new menu that includes, pizzas, sliders and so much more including a broad range of beverage options to suit everyone’s tastebuds. It’s going to be a family friendly venue for all demographics, ages, and abilities so regardless of whether you are a golfer or not, there is an experience to enjoy for everyone.

What has been the most pleasantly surprisingly thing about your first few months with us?

A new employer brings new joys and challenges, but I’ve been made to feel very comfortable, really quickly. I have never felt alone or lost and there are so many wonderful, friendly people within the business that have made me feel welcome. The guidance received and the relationships I am building are also a bonus.

What are you most excited about achieving in the next 12 months?

I can’t wait to build a team of dynamic, multiskilled, happy people to look after our guests. Our high-level customer service, food and bev plus entertainment offerings will bring people from far and wide and I cant wait for all the “Wow, that’s awesome” feedback to come in thick and fast.

What’s something people always find interesting when they learn it about you?

I’m Married (Melissa) and have three ripper Kids, My eldest is Chloe is 28y.o, Madison 25y.o and youngest Ashton 15y.o. I’m an extremely passionate North Melbourne Kangaroo supporter and expect success this year and have high hopes for my Golf Handicap to drop as low as 8 in the next 12 months.

Can you tell us some fun facts about The Range?

45,120 Golf balls have now been ordered and received. The venue will have over 90 TV screens within, Bryce Gorham our Golf Pro already holds the Minigolf Course Record. There will be AFL Goal posts within the Range hitting area to practice your Golf Ball Goal hitting!

Anything else you’d like to share?

A couple of life lessons my Dad taught me that I like to live by:

Find a way, Not an excuse.
People always remember how you made them feel and
Turn that frown upside down, a simple smile can make someone’s day.

Last week, I had the pleasure of catching up with Summer, who has worked across various Federal Hospitality venues. I first met Summer during her initial interview in June 2024, and from the moment we met, I knew she would be a great fit for our business. Summer shared her experience of working with Federal Hospitality and a little about herself, enjoy!

Why did you choose Federal Hospitality as your employer?

I had always heard great things about Federal Hospitalty and admired its strong reputation. I had been consistently applying for opportunities, and one day I received a call from Lauren regarding a role in the Food & Beverage team. That’s when my journey with Federal Hospitality began and I started my career at Landscape Restaurant in the Henry Jones Art Hotel.

What roles have you held with us over time?

Currently, I work as a Food & Beverage Attendant, moving between various restaurants within Federal Hospitality, including Longhorn, Landscape, and Old Wharf. This has given me the chance to gain valuable experience in different environments, helping me build a strong understanding of the industry.

Tell us about the last few years of your work experience?

I’ve been living in Tasmania for almost six years. During that time, I worked as a barista at a local café while studying cookery and also gained experience at restaurants like Mures and the Crown Plaza Hotel. With the knowledge and skills I developed, I transitioned into my current role as a Food & Beverage Attendant.

Tell us something people are often suprised to hear about you

My favorite animal is a rat, which often surprises people. I love them because, unlike dogs that look up to you or cats that look down on you, rats see you as a friend. I grew up with small animals, and that connection always stuck with me. I also enjoy riding beam scooters around Hobart, and I can eat an 800g steak in one sitting!

Did you know some horses love cordial?

As you walk across the grounds toward the stables at Country Club, a sense of peace washes over you. The horses stand calmly in their stables, surrounded by beautiful trees, the sun beaming down, and even the occasional paddymelon hopping by. It’s easy to see how working here could become addictive!

I met with Darian, the Stable Manager, to gain a deeper understanding of the stables and the incredible horses that call this place home.

- Darian, tell us a little about the stables:

All of our horses were born and bred by the Farrell family at their stud in NSW. The exception is Scout, who was born and bred here in Tasmania.

Our job is to guide guests on rides, care for these amazing animals, and simply spend time with them. It’s a cool job, though not without its challenges!

- Have you worked with horses your entire life?

I had a horse when I was a kid named Tommy. I learned the riding basics on him, steering, going, and, of course, falling off and getting back on. I still remember the day he rolled on me; I was so scared! As he started going down, I took a dive. My mom told me to get back on, so I did, and despite the scare, he was a lot of fun.

I worked at other properties across the state, including Bellevue, where we have 23 retired horses. That experience gave me a strong foundation and a great relationship with the horses, which helped when I started working here. I’d say Bellevue taught me a lot and opened so many doors for me in the horse world.

Would you like to meet our horses? We can start with Fiesta, who, if you can believe it, loves green cordial.

- How do you find out a horse likes green cordial?

One of the girls was drinking green cordial one day, and he showed a lot of interest. Ever since then, it’s been a running joke, he’s also a big fan of biscuits. I remember chewing on one, and suddenly, he was all over my pocket, like, “Give me some!” I gave in, and now biscuits officially count as dessert.

Gabby, our other horse, is also a biscuit lover, and Pony, I found out a few weeks ago, has a taste for Bananas.

- Can you tell us about the dynamics of the horses and their relationships with each other?

The herd hierarchy is always shifting. For example, Pony is the boss of Legacy, our small brown horse, and Legacy is the boss of Tinkerbell, but Tinkerbell is the boss of Pony. So just because one horse is in charge of another doesn’t mean they’re at the top of the whole group; it’s a constantly changing dynamic.

I’ve noticed a shift recently. Gabby and Margarita used to be best friends but now, Margarita seems to be bonding more with Prim, and Legacy is loving Gabby. Something’s changed, but who knows what, it’s just classic horse drama!

- What's your favourite part of your job?

Honestly, some of the best moments happen when nothing is going on—when the horses are just out in the paddock, we've finished feeding them, and I’m simply walking around. They’ll come up on their own, and I’ll say hello, give them a little scratch. There’s no pressure, no stress—just being with them. That’s pretty special.

On the riding side of things, I absolutely love taking out customers, but what really stands out to me is helping someone who’s truly nervous. You can see it—the shaking hands, the tension, the fear. But by the time we’ve done a lap around the track, they start to relax, and when they get off, sometimes they’ll say, “Oh my God, can I give you a hug?” They’re so proud of themselves, knowing they just checked something off their bucket list. That, to me, is incredibly rewarding.

It’s the same when working with our Reclink and our connection programs. We work with disadvantaged youth and disability groups. Watching how the horses interact with them is nothing short of incredible. You’d think that in an unpredictable situation, things could go wrong, but the horses just know. They pick up on the energy, becoming so gentle and kind, forming this deep connection that’s truly second to none.

No matter where these kids end up in life, they might forget my name, but they’ll never forget the horse that made them feel, and I’ll never forget them either. That, to me, is something truly special.

As I left the stables, I felt both refreshed and inspired. Darian and her team do exceptional work, creating a lasting impact on our stables.If you’re ever at Country Club, be sure to book a trail ride with this amazing team—it’s an experience you won’t forget!

Oliver returns home to Wrest Point

I first met Oliver on his first day back at Wrest Point. As I led him through the kitchen, the team greeted him with warm knowing hellos, welcome backs, and hugs. I had to know more about his story and what led him back to Wrest Point in two quick questions!

- Lauren, Talent Acquisition Advisor

Tell me about your work history and how you returned to Wrest Point?

Eight years ago, I was studying at Le Cordon Bleu and needed to complete a seven-month work placement. I chose Wrest Point because it was a large hotel, entertainment venue, and casino, offering a variety of experiences. I worked in Pastry for three months, then moved to the production kitchen, and finally the buffet breakfast section. I loved my time there and learned a lot from the chefs, especially Chef Andre, who became a father figure to me. Chef Andre is incredibly busy, but he still took the time to write me a recommendation letter within a day of my request, which meant a lot to me. Wrest Point felt like family, and I always looked back on the experience fondly.

After completing my placement, I returned to Sydney to finish my studies and worked casually at Pearl Catering and Novotel. I then moved to Adelaide for a few years, where I worked at a busy breakfast café called Karma and Crow. In 2019, I moved back to Taiwan with plans to stay for a few months, but then Covid hit, and I ended up staying for three years. During my time in Taiwan, I worked in various cities and restaurants, learning from local chefs. I gained valuable experience cooking with both local and indigenous ingredients, as well as Western cuisine.

After the borders reopened, I decided to return to Australia, where I spent two years working as Head Chef at a busy café. During this time, I also worked as an agency Chef across various venues, including Adelaide Oval, catering for functions and events. So, when I needed to move to Hobart for my visa, I reached out to Chef Andre to see if there were any job openings, and luckily, there were.

Now, I'm working as a Commis Chef at The Point Revolving Restaurant at Wrest Point.

What do you do for fun outside of work?

I love buying cookbooks, but I never seem to find the time to read them. I’ll come across one, think "Oh, this looks great," buy it, and then it just ends up sitting on the shelf. Of course, I love cooking as well, especially experimenting with different cuisines.

This month, 34 leaders from across Federal Hospitality graduated with a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management through our EMBRACE Leadership Development Program.

It is a meaningful milestone for our graduates, their teams, and everyone helping shape the future of leadership at Federal Hospitality.

Delivered in partnership with SCALA the Training Company since 2024, EMBRACE focuses on growing leadership from within. The 10 month program is practical and relevant, building confidence while strengthening the skills that matter in the day to day of a leader.

What stands out most is how that learning carries back into the business, from our front of house teams through to our corporates. It is supporting people, improving how we work, and continuing to build strong leaders across the organisation.
